U.S. elite Logan Wealing took gold and Doug Friman and Jasmine
Oeinck won silver at the International Triathlon Union
(ITU)
Rincon Triathlon Caribbean Cup on June 12 in Puerto
Rico.
Wealing
(Fowler, Ind.), an athlete in USA Triathlon's resident program
at the Olympic Training Center, won his first ITU Continental
Cup race in 1 hour, 48 minutes, 53 seconds.
Friman
(Tucson, Ariz.) was second in 1:49:13 and Nicolas Becker of
France was third in 1:49:41.
The
U.S. men, and particularly those who are part of the USAT
Development Program, dominated the top 10 as Under-23 National
Team members Jarrod Shoemaker (Sudbury, Mass.) and Matt
Seymour (Pleasanton, Calif.) finished sixth and seventh
respectively. U.S. elite Mark Fretta (Portland, Ore.) was
eighth and Derek Kite (Malibu, Calif.) was
ninth.
In the
women's race, U23 triathlete Oeinck (Littleton, Colo.) was
second behind Canada's Natasha Filliol, who finished in
2:03:07. Oeinck finished in 2:06:35 and Ayesha Rollinson of
Canada was third in 2:07:12.
The
U.S. women also had a strong showing in the top 10, as U23 team member Kelsey
Withrow (Woodinville, Wash.) was fourth and Jenna
Shoemaker (Sudbury, Mass.) was sixth.
Sarah
Haskins (Boulder, Colo.), a resident athlete at the OTC,
finished seventh.
"I
could not be more excited about these results," said USA
Triathlon National Teams Program Director Libby Burrell. "We
have some great young athletes coming up through our
pipeline."
